Our son is obsessed with foxes and loves the concept of veterinarians, so this book seemed an ideal step up from picture books to story books. There are some illustrations all the same, each one carefully drawn and lovely, to help engage a younger audience and they worked a charm in peaking his interest.The story actually follows multiple threads, including finding homes for a litter of kittens, training a dog, a photography competition and, of course, an injured fox with a family in peril. Some of these continue on into the following book in the series, for which you get a sample at the end of this one. Anyway, don’t expect 100% foxes, even if it is the key theme.Our protagonists are a couple of kids eager to prove themselves able to help out at the Animal Ark. They do this by helping to discover how and where the fox was hurt and finding its den through a little detective work. The storyline is generally quite gentle and contains nothing to overly worry young children. There is a passage in the woods at night where the characters get a little spooked, which led to our son being a little worried for them, but nothing more troublesome than that.Fox Cub Danger is a nice introduction to reading for children who love animals and dream of having all sorts of pets. The plot line is standard fare and quite predictable for adults, but exactly what children want. Looks like we’re going to have to get the next in the series already…
